How a breast reduction works
A breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a form of plastic surgery that removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve your ideal breast size. During your initial consultation, Dr. Bash will examine the size and shape of your breasts and the sizes of your areolas. Depending on your desired reduction amount and other deciding factors, Dr. Bash will determine which breast surgery technique is the best for your situation.
After Dr. Bash has removed excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher position. As a result, the breasts will not only be smaller, but lifted as well. The areola, which in large breasts usually has been stretched, is reduced in size and the skin that was formerly located above the nipple is brought down and together to reshape the breast. Sometimes breast reduction surgery is covered by insurance—you are welcome to call the office to see if you might meet criteria for insurance coverage and Dr. Bash will help refer you to someone in your insurance network.
What to Expect
Following breast reduction surgery, your breasts will be covered with gauze and supported with a surgical support bra or Ace Bandage. Small tubes
may be placed at the incision sites to drain any excess blood or fluid, but those will be removed usually in one day. You may take a shower the day after your surgery. Your breasts will be swollen and bruised for about two weeks, but you will be able to move around normally as long as you limit strenuous exercise and lifting. The results from a breast reduction should be long lasting. Once corrected, the breasts should remain relatively stable, assuming weight does not fluctuate greatly.
Surgery Risks
Significant complications from a breast reduction are infrequent, but may include:
- Reduced sensitivity or loss of sensation in the nipples
- Breast asymmetry or irregularities
- Uneven areolas
- Difficulty or inability with breast-feeding
- Adverse reaction to anesthesia
- Infection
- Allergic reaction to surgical materials
- Damage to the blood supply of the nipple or areola (rare)
- Thick, wide scars resulting from poor healing (rare)
